The Grimes Brief

Guide · Schools

The schools that serve Grimes: the Dallas Center-Grimes district, building by building.

For most families, the schools are the reason they land in Grimes. Nearly all of the city is served by the Dallas Center-Grimes district, one of the metro's fast-growing and well-regarded systems. Here is how it is laid out.

The short version

Most of Grimes is in the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District (DCG), which serves about 3,500 students across seven buildings. The high school is home of the Mustangs (red and white), in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The northeast edge of town falls in the Johnston district.

The district

Dallas Center-Grimes (DCG)

The Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District spans both Dallas Center and Grimes and serves roughly 3,500 students from preschool through 12th grade, a number the district says is still growing quickly. The district website is dcgschools.com.

The district also runs preschool and transitional-kindergarten programs.

Friday nights

The DCG Mustangs

Dallas Center-Grimes High School competes as the Mustangs, in red and white, as a member of the Little Hawkeye Conference. We track Mustangs scores and schedules in the weekly Brief, and we always confirm the venue, since a home date on one schedule can be an away game once you check.

The exception

The Johnston edge

Not all of Grimes is DCG. The northeast edge of town, toward Johnston, falls in the Johnston Community School District. If you are house-hunting, confirm the school assignment for the specific address rather than assuming it by the city name.
