The Grimes Brief
Grimes is a good walking and biking town, with a growing network of paved paths that link its parks and newer neighborhoods. And for a longer haul, one of the longest paved trails in the country is a short drive away. Here is the honest lay of the land.
For an everyday walk or ride, use the city trail network connecting the parks. For a long-distance ride, the Raccoon River Valley Trail is a short drive southwest, with its nearest trailhead in Waukee.
The City of Grimes maintains a network of paved multi-use trails that tie together the parks and residential areas, good for a family walk, a jog, or an evening bike ride close to home. As the city grows, the trail system keeps expanding with it.
To be accurate about it: the Raccoon River Valley Trail does not run through Grimes itself. It is a roughly 89-mile paved loop system that runs through Waukee, Adel, Perry, Jefferson, and other Dallas, Guthrie, and Greene county towns. The nearest trailhead to Grimes is in Waukee, near Sugar Creek Elementary at the corner of Hickman Road and North 10th Street, a short drive southwest. From there you can ride for hours.
